WWA Wairarapa Weekend 25th & 26th April

The Wild Winds Freestyle Nationals, 14th March 2009, Eastbourne.

The Wild Winds Freestyle Windsurfing Nationals are being held this coming weekend, the 14th and 15th of March at Eastbourne in Wellington. It is going to be one hell of an event and is the first time a freestyle windsurfing event of this size has been run in New Zealand.

Freestyle windsurfing itself is a young discipline. It is essentially skateboarding on water and has been developed and grown over the last ten years bringing with it a fresh new face to windsurfing. Flips, spins and rotations of all height and speed is what freestyle is all about. Needless to say it is an amazing spectacle to behold.

Being the inaugural Freestyle Nationals for New Zealand, it is an anticipated event. With the help of the main sponsor, Wild Winds, as well as the Wellington Windsurfing Association, a national champion will finally be crowned in freestyle. The event organizer and head judge, Tom Taylor, who has competed internationally on the professional windsurfing tour, is stoked to bring this event to fruition; “freestyle windsurfing is wicked, its fresh and new and now we are finally going to be able to showcase the talent that New Zealand has to offer at Eastbourne this weekend.”

Even the event format is being run in a new way. Rather than the usual heat format, where much of the action is out to sea and marks are given for consistency, the competition area will be a marked off box, just metres off the shore. Instead of consistency, the new format will reward radical moves and crowd appeal. This new shift in competition format is brand new to New Zealand and will not only be more of a crowd pleaser, but will push competitors to go for the biggest, most extreme moves in order to impress the judges. Moves such as the coveted forward flip will be landed literally within metres of the beach. The ante has also been upped, thanks to Wild Winds, with $500 prize money up for grabs.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the event however, will be the jump ramp. A purpose built jump ramp is being transported to Wellington especially for the event. The jump works like any skateboard or bike ramp, propelling the windsurfers even higher into the air, allowing them to do bigger moves. This is the first time a jump ramp has been used in competition in Australasia, and with its own prize money of $100, it will be an amazing addition to the Freestyle Nationals.

So come down and check it out, with music and a barbeque this really will be an extreme sports event that can’t be missed.

Entry forms can be downloaded from www.deepfried.tv. If you would prefer to receive one by email simply send an email to freestylenationals@gmail.com. Entries close 9:30am on Saturday so either email or send it in, or get there early and signed up on the day.

New Speed Record Set With Crossbow IDS

Its official. Kitesurfing is the fastest sailing craft on the planet! Rob Douglas, from Martha's Vineyard (USA) has just broken the world speed sailing record in Luderitz, Namibia on a Cabrinha Crossbow kite. The record, previously held by Antoine Albeau on a Neil Pryde windsurfing rig was just shattered by Douglas with an official posting of 49.84 knots.

With his record breaking run, Rob had this to say. "The 7 meter Crossbow IDS is the perfect engine...... every run...... a Ferrari for sure!" Rob worked together with Cabrinha designer, Pat Goodman to outfit a production Crossbow canopy with a specially tuned bridle and control system for top end speed. The result of this collaboration speaks for itself.

Rob's incredible rise to the top of the speed chain did not come by accident. Rob is one of the most professionally equipped and methodical kitesurfing athletes we've seen in a long time..... perhaps ever. He is joined in Luderitz by Olympic silver medalist Mike Gebhart who has acted as coach, trainer and equipment assistant during the campaign. At 5'11 inches and yielding a solid 225 lbs of muscle, Rob is the perfect candidate for speed sailing.

The celebration period will be short lived for Rob as he now gets back to business and sets his sights squarely on the coveted 50 knot benchmark. According to Rob, the 50 knot ceiling will fall by the end of this event.

We wish Rob the best of luck for the remainder of the event. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting couple of weeks.

WWA Windsurfing weekend in the Wairarapa 24-25 May 2008

The idea is that we will get some windsurfing in on either Lake Oneke for speed sailors, freestylers and freeriders, or Cape Palliser for the wave sailors, with a bit of a knees up at the Lake Ferry Pub on the Saturday night. If there is no wind there are plenty of other options including surfing, golf, fishing, wineries, sight seeing, nursing hangovers, etc. This will be a weekend not to miss for beginners to expert sailors alike.
Accommodation is available at the Lake Ferry Pub - http://lakeferryhotel.co.nz/contact.html - or at the camp ground. If you want to secure a room ($60 single, $95 double) at the Lake Ferry Pub, for reservations phone 06-307 7831. If you miss out on the pub or want a cheaper option the Lake Ferry camp ground located right next to the lake has heaps of space, some cabins available. For camp ground accommodation please deal directly with the owners - http://www.nzcamping.co.nz/camp.php3?id=431
